The Band Program offers a variety of courses in multiple bands, each focused on development of different levels of skill. All courses/bands require audition and/or Director’s approval. Gap years in any band are not allowed; students must follow courses consecutively. Students will be required to spend time outside the normal school day and on weekends to fulfill the requirements for each band.

Concert Bands

Entry level concert bands include the Cadet and Concert Bands and emphasize the development of fundamental and intermediate musical skills. These bands may appear in concerts, athletic events, parades, festivals, civic functions and other public performances and students are required to participate in UIL.

Advanced level concert bands include the Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble. Both bands emphasize the refinement of advanced individual and ensemble musical skills and appear in concerts, athletic events, parades, festivals, civic functions, and other public performances. The Wind Ensemble is for those students who meet the highest musical and performance standards; however, students in both bands are required to participate in UIL.

Jazz Bands

Jazz Bands include Temple Blues (Jazz Band II) and Highlighters (Jazz Band I)

Temple Blues is a training unit for Highlighters and provides students an introduction to jazz fundamentals. Temple Blues allows the students an opportunity to rehearse and perform music from the jazz repertoire and often appears in public performances and festival competitions.

Highlighters is comprised of students who have demonstrated excellence in instrumental musical ability and performance and provides students with an opportunity to rehearse and perform music from the advanced jazz repertoire. Highlighters maintain a rigorous performance schedule with frequent public performances and festival competitions.

Marching Band

All concert bands combine to create the Marching Band and all students must participate in Marching Band. This is our most visible presence in the fall and this band competes in both UIL and community performances. Students receive PE credit for participation in Marching Band.

Color Guard

In the fall, the Color Guard is part of the Marching Band; in the Spring, the Color Guard transitions into indoor guard, known as the Winter Guard. Our Color Guard performs at various Texas Color Guard Circuit events during Spring semester. Color Guard students must enroll in both Color Guard and Marching Band courses; students receive PE credit for participation in Color Guard.
